Things to know about Gainesville High and its football team …
-GHS averages 41 points per game and allows 13.7
-GHS has failed to score 30 points in a game only twice this season. It went 1-1 in those contests, losing to Lake City Columbia 16-13.
-Against North Suncoast teams, GHS is 2-0; it beat Central 70-0 and Springstead 45-13.
-Two GHS players -- DB Devont’a Davis and LB Kevin Nelson -- are committed to the Miami Hurricanes.
-The school is not nicknamed the Hurricanes as most believe, but the Purple Hurricanes.
-NFL RB Clinton Portis was a Purple Hurricane in the late 1990s, but he is not the school’s most famous alum. That honor belongs to rock & roll legend Tom Petty (in photo).
-GHS won its lone state football championship in 1980, beating Titusville 21-15 for the 3A title.
-Although it is one of the state’s oldest schools, GHS does not have its own stadium. The team plays at Citizen’s Field in east Gainesville -- which it shares with rival schools Buchholz and Eastside.
-Actress Brittany Daniel, co-star of the cinematic classic Joe Dirt, is a GHS grad.
