A-5 cross country: Depth key as Keswick girls, Shorecrest boys cruise

Posted on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009 at 7:53 p.m.

LARGO — Depth typically is the difference at districts.

Exhibit A: Thursday's Class A, District 5 meet at Taylor Park.

On a cool and breezy morning, the Keswick Christian girls and Shorecrest Prep boys each placed five runners in the top 30. As a result, both won in impression fashion.

Keswick finished with 67 points, nine better than runnerup Lakeland Christian. Shorecrest (80) posted an 18-point win over Seffner Christian.

"We all ran to our full potential," said Shorecrest's Caelum Schandle, who was fifth.

The top six teams and top 15 runners advanced to regionals.

On the boys side, Admiral Farragut (third) and Northside Christian (fifth) moved on, along with individuals Joshua Johnson of Indian Rocks Christian (sixth, 17:46) and Grant Shelton of Canterbury (eighth, 18:06).

Northside Christian (third), Shorecrest (fourth), Canterbury (fifth) and Indian Rocks (sixth) were the other local girls squads to advance. Kamila Widulinski of Admiral Farragut (11th, 20:39) also survived the cut.

Northside Christian's Katelyn Greenleaf was the girls overall champion, tying her personal best by finishing in 18:45. It was her eighth win this season but first district title.

"I'm so glad," Greenleaf said. "I've been stuck in the mid-19s the whole entire year."

Keswick's girls had four among the first 16 to cross the finish, led by Hannah Palm (sixth, 20:15), Rachel Kistemaker (13th, 20:40) and Stephanie Kistemaker (14th, 20:45).

"It means a lot to win," Palm said. "We've been trying to pull together."

After Schandle, the Shorecrest boys got nice runs by, among others, Rheese Wiltshire (seventh, 17:57) and Jake Crotts (17th, 18:33). Admiral Farragut's Blake Arnold, who placed fourth (17:28), was the highest county finisher in the boys race.

"I'm pretty happy I made it to regionals," Arnold said.
