LARGO — Seffner Christian boys coach Andy Holmes knew his squad was capable of producing a solid finish in Thursday's Class A, District 5 cross country meet at Taylor Park.
But what the Crusaders did surprised even him.
With four runners among the first 20 to finish, Seffner Christian, a second-year program, totaled 98 points to place second by 18 behind champion Shorecrest.
"I definitely was not expecting to be runnerup," Holmes said. "But they're very confident right now."
The top six teams and top 15 runners advanced to regionals.
Besides Seffner Christian, Hillsborough County will be represented at regionals by the Tampa Prep boys, who placed sixth, and Lauren Knoke of the Tampa Prep girls squad; she was seventh.
Seffner Christian was led by Michael Oquendo, 13th in 18 minutes, 21 seconds. Teammate Andrew Davis was close behind, placing 14th in 18:25. Robbie Fearnow (16th, 18:29) and Brian Fearnow (19th, 18:38) were the Crusaders' next highest finishers.
"We wanted to have four in the top 20 and we did," Holmes said.
The Tampa Prep boys were led by Mihir Dubey (15th, 18:26).
Keswick Christian won the girls title by nine points over runnerup Lakeland Christian. Tampa Prep was seventh, missing out on a region berth after finishing one point behind sixth-place Indian Rocks Christian. Seffner Christian took ninth.
For Knoke, who finished in 20:17, it was a day with mixed emotions.
She's moving on; her teammates aren't.
"I'm more disappointed the team didn't make it," Knoke said. "They definitely gave it their all."
